Leadership Statement

Since attending my first NCURA conference in 2000, my journey with NCURA has been transformative. With just four years in the field at that time, my then Director encouraged me to attend the national conference in Washington, DC. This experience turned what was merely a job into a passionate career. The conference revealed the profound impact of research administration and the vital role we play in advancing society.

In 2008, I took another significant step by engaging with NCURA at the regional level, not just as a participant but as a volunteer on the program committee. Over the years, I have continued to deepen my involvement, serving on various committees and as a mentor in the RAMP program. These experiences have allowed me to collaborate with outstanding colleagues, form valuable partnerships, and develop lasting friendships.

My leadership philosophy is shaped by core beliefs: it takes a village, allies are crucial for success, treat others as you wish to be treated, and always give back. These principles have guided my approach within Region III, where I have found a true community. This community of allies and friends has encouraged me, supported me through challenges, and celebrated my achievements. They have modeled exemplary leadership, which I strive to emulate in my own work.

As a leader, I foster an environment of learning, psychological safety, and support. I believe in creating a positive and productive work atmosphere by maintaining clear communication, setting achievable goals, and consistently monitoring performance. My team operates as a village where we act as allies, supporters, colleagues, and friends.

It is this blend of community spirit and leadership experience that uniquely positions me to serve as the Chair for NCURA Region III. I am dedicated to nurturing the same sense of community, support, and excellence that I have experienced. My commitment to fostering a collaborative and empowering environment will guide my efforts to lead Region III effectively.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am eager to continue contributing to the vibrant NCURA community and to support the ongoing growth and success of Region III.

Diversity Statement

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you personally?

To me, diversity, equity, and inclusion encompass the following:

Diversity: Embracing the wide range of perspectives, experiences, and beliefs that each person brings. It is about respecting and understanding these differences to create a richer, more vibrant community.

Equity: Acknowledging that while we may all face the same storm, we are not all in the same boat. Equity involves ensuring that everyone starts from the same point by providing the necessary resources and opportunities to those who need them.

Inclusion: Ensuring everyone has a seat at the table. Recognizing and valuing everyone’s strengths and contributions and providing opportunities for everyone to participate and share their unique insights.

What is your personal position on and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion? Please give examples, and share which experience was the most impactful.

My journey with diversity, equity, and inclusion began in high school when I participated in a STEM program at New York University aimed at low to middle-income minority students. This program provided me with support and opportunities that led to my acceptance at NYU, where I earned my bachelor’s degree. This experience was transformative, highlighting the profound impact of inclusive programs on personal and academic growth.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion extend beyond race to encompass respect and fairness for all, regardless of race, gender, nationality, religious belief, sexual orientation, and other differences. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable. In my professional life, I am dedicated to creating an environment that fosters opportunities for all, with zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or bullying. In my leadership roles, I promote an atmosphere of learning, psychological safety, and mutual support, expecting all colleagues to respect and value diverse contributions.

What are some diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that you would like to see within NCURA?

I envision increased engagement from diverse populations within NCURA. One initiative could be the creation of an allyship program where new members are paired with seasoned members to guide them on their professional journey. This “Lift as You Rise” mentality can help foster mentorship, support, and engagement.
